First post from web box 2.0

Leaving the Eee has been surprisingly easy.

I’m posting this from a new partition on an old dev box running Ubuntu.

Instant wins over the Eee:

Point and click installation of Firefox 3.0, Gnumeric and Gimp. Big performance improvement.

Sure I could have found a way to get them on the Eee, but frankly building up a fresh machine is probably quicker and easier. (Pure point and click joy with Ubuntu, no command line messing at all).

The highlight was moving Thunderbird – I copied the folder to a pen drive, then pasted it to this box, everything works, even the theme is the same – class.

The screen resolution won’t go as high as the Eee (old graphics card).

Actually I’m happy to be .net free and basic free, at least for the time being.

    Maybe Lazarus then?!
I think that it shows the strength of the Linux community, that there are so many options out there and the quality seems to be very high, it’s quite exciting!

Just pure C99 C for now, drifting into C++.
Then some PHP, and a bit of python in due course.
You’ve obviously had a good poke around – I hadn’t heard of any of these.
